Officials: 1922-23, OHEMS: 5m. pink, pair, neatly tied on 1923 (23.6) Official cover from Asyut via Cairo
(backstamp) to London, England, by ASYUT/23.6.23 cds with similar cds and oval steel hs “MINING
WORKSHOPS / ASSIUT” alongside, a fine and scarce usage.
Note: The official imprint on the envelope has been altered: the Arabic “Government of the Khedive of
Egypt” has been obliterated and “Government of the Sultan of Egypt” has been added. This was done
on the deposing of Khedive Abbas Hilmi on 19th Dec. 1914 (because of his pro German views) and his
replacement by Sultan Hussein Kamil. The latter was promoted from Khedive to Sultan chiefly to spite
the Ottoman Empire leaders.
