S.G. 20a
1851 5d chestnut with “Ormond Hill” cancelled handstamp, pos.1 from the block of six, very fine and
very rare, only 4 examples recorded of which one is in the Royal collection (illustrated by Jaffé in
“Cancelled by Perkins Bacon”); cert. RPS (2004) (S.G. £9’000).
Note: In 1861 Ormond Hill, nephew of Roland Hill, requested hat Perkins Bacon supply him with six
copies of each stamp they had printed. The printers took the precaution of obliterating them with a barred
oval handstamp with the word “CANCELLED”. The blocks of six were broken up and distributed among
the Hill family. When word of this became know, the printing contract was taken away from Perkins Bacon
and handed over to De La Rue.
