1857-61 Washington 10c green, type V, in horizontal strips of four and five, block of six and single,
the block with interpane margin with guideline at left, one strip with selvedge at right, tied by red
grid cancels with matching “New-York Br. Pkt. Jun. 12” (1860) circular datestamp on folded letter to
Shanghai, China, red “Forwarded by Goodhue & Co. New York” oval backstamp on reverse, magenta
manuscript ““1.42” credit, manuscript “4” British Colonial credit, London and Hong Kong transits, filing
fold affecting block, missing an additional stamp at upper left (probably a 5c to make the 33c x 5 rate),
still very fine and extremely unusual high franking to the far east, signed on the reverse by Ashbrook
and illustrated in the Ashbrook file archives at The Philatelic Foundation’s website; cert. P.F. (1976 ).

1861 (AU 3) outer letter sheet to France franked 5c. and 10c. tied single San Francisco cds, paying rate
to Bordeaux, judged to be overweight and struck with red framed SHORT PAID handstamp, routed via
New York where 18c handstamp applied, the previous red New York cancel overstruck with red grill,
arriving in France on 17 Aug; faults to paper where name and town partly erased.
