Introduction

Dear Collector and Client,

It gives us great pleasure to bring to the market this auction catalogue of nearly 700

lots of Asia, featuring the “Hamburg” collection, the Dr. Azizkhan collection of

Tibet and Indian States including the Dan Walker collection of Nandgaon. The

auction starts at 2pm CET on Saturday 20th June, which we hope should allow

collectors from the East and West to follow the auction live.

The “Hamburg” collection belongs to an astute pan-Asian collector and features

throughout this catalogue (denoted by red stars next to the lot number). The

collections are fresh to the market, having been formed over many years, and

include Afghanistan, Nepal, India and Indian States, with particularly impressive

assemblies of Cochin and Jammu & Kashmir, China, Japan and Thailand (as well

as Malaysia and Hong Kong in our GB & British Empire catalogue).

The Dr. Azizkhan collection of Tibet is the first time since 2017 that we have had

such a magnificent offering of the classic issues including proofs and complete

sheetlets in a range of shades and settings not to mention a variety of postal

history. The section of covers from the Chinese Post Offices in Tibet should prove

a popular section. Dr. Azizkhan has also entrusted us with his British Occupation in

Italian Colonies collection of postal history (in the GB & British Empire catalogue)

and his Italy and Italian States (in the Europe & Overseas catalogue).

The final section of note is the India & Indian States. Among the Scinde Dawks

and Litho issues of India on offer, one of the highlights is the½ a vermilion “9½

arches” marginal block of eight (lot 60159). And as already mentioned, the India

States features particularly difficult-to-find material from Cochin and Jammu &

Kashmir as well as Dan Walker’s Nandgaon featuring the unique cover with S.G.1

and S.G.2 (featured on the back cover).

The David Feldman team strives for excellence in the lotting and promotion of

every property entrusted to us, and we’d like to thank all our vendors for showing

their faith in us to present their items and collections in a catalogue worthy of

displaying their philatelic treasures in their best possible light. We wish you

success with your bids and satisfaction with your purchases.

Ricky Verra

Director of Philately

Geneva, May 2026

The following biographical note

introduces Dr. Richard G. Azizkhan,

whose collection of Tibet is included

in the present catalogue (see pages

120 to 170).

Dr. Richard Azizkhan is a world renowned Pediatric Surgeon and

Professor who has trained thousands of medical professionals

worldwide during his 45 year career. His avocational passion

since early childhood was collecting stamps and postal history.

He lived 3 years as a child in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.

In the early 1960’s, living in the foothills of the Himalayas

afforded him some unique opportunities to learn about Tibetan

culture and Lamaism as well as interacting with the Tibetan and

Nepalese peoples. His father, Dr. Reza George Azizkhan, Sr. was

a British trained surgeon and the Superintendent of the Dooars

and Darjeeling Tea Planters Hospital from 1961-1964. It was

during this time that the 14th Dalai Lama’s Mother required

medical and surgical care rendered by Dr. Azizkhan, Sr. As an

acknowledgement and gratitude for his excellent care, the Dalai

Lama’s secretary gave him 2 gifts from his Holiness. One was a

personal rosary used by his Holiness and the other was a packet

of a dozen Tibetan stamps for young Richard. At age 9, this was

the seed for Richard’s life-long journey and passion of Philately.

The initial small collection had a variety of used and unused

1933 edition native stamps including a 1 Tranka half proof and

two larger 3 Tranka parcel stamps from the early 1950’s never

formally accepted by Waterfall and other experts.

After completing Medical School in 1975, Richard returned to

Darjeeling to spend several months providing care to the local

population under the supervision of Dr. Tsewang Pemba, the first

Tibetan who was a British trained physician. Dr. Pemba through

his regional notoriety and contacts introduced Richard to

members of the Bhutanese Royal Family and prominent Tibetans

who lived in the region who provided him interesting information

about the Tibetan postal system as well as the significant

changes that occurred with Tibet becoming incorporated into

People’s Republic of China.

Over the years, Richard was also mentored by the late Geoffrey

Flack, a world famous Nepal and Tibet philatelic expert who

helped him expand the foundation of his collection. Dr. Armand

Singer, David Crocker, Leo Martyn and Rainer Fuchs were also

advisors and helped Richard enlarge the collection with material

from several gold medal collections. Richard’s focus was

developing a collection that covered the critical historical time

periods in Tibetan Philately from 19th century pre-stamp era

to the 1970’s. Included in the collection are Chinese Imperial

Post, British expedition and post offices, independent Tibet

with detailed setting and color variation studies, PRC Military

campaign through the development of a comprehensive postal

system under the People’s Republic of China. Richard is a life

member of the Nepal Tibet Philatelic Study Circle.
