Introduction

Dear Collector and Client,

David Feldman International Auctioneers is delighted to bring to the market an

outstanding offering of the “Anna” Pence Issue Postal History Collection.

In 1851, responsibility for the postal system was transferred from Great Britain

to Canada. The standard domestic postage rate was established at 3 pence,

regardless of distance. Stamps were issued with denominations of 3, 6 and 12

pence, which were followed in 1855 by 10 pence, in 1857 by ½ and 7½ pence, and

in 1858/59 by perforated stamps of ½, 3, and 6 pence stamps. On July 1, 1859,

the pence period came to an end with the decimalisation of the currency. During

this time, significant developments took place in postal administration, stamp

issuance and mail services, reflecting Canada’s transition toward a more modern

and standardised system.

The collection explores the regular uses of the issued stamps and the distinctive

characteristics of these issues as seen on cover. It further examines postal

operations during the subsequent cents period, including cancellations, domestic

mail, and postage-free correspondence. Additional focus is given to specialised

services such as money letters and registered mail, as well as the handling of

forwarded letters and military mail. The scope also extends to international and

interprovincial communications, covering mail exchanged with other provinces of

present-day Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Europe and other countries.

Drawing on a wide range of philatelic literature and notable auction catalogues,

this work provides a comprehensive overview of the postal practices and historical

context of Canada’s early stamp era.

Like with every great collection, provenance is a vital part of validation, and in

this respect, the “Anna” collection does not disappoint with items from many of

the most well-known collectors, including Reford, Caspary, Dale-Lichtenstein,

Jarrett, V. Greene, Bill Lea, Charles Firby, John Siverts, Foxbridge, Henry Luebke,

Ed Richardson, Sam Nickle, Horace Harrison, Dr. J. Robertson, Carrington, Guildford,

Warren Wilkinson, Bill Gross, Joseph Hackmey, Cantor and Brigham.

Wishing you all every success with your bids, we hope that you enjoy this catalogue

and its content.
