Introduction
Dear Collector and Client,
It gives us great pleasure to present in this
catalogue nearly 650 lots of Great Britain,
nearly 400 lots of Ireland and over 600
lots of British Empire. Plus, don’t miss
all the India and Indian States lots in our
specialised Asia catalogue as well.
Our auction week kicks off on Tuesday 16th
June at 10am CET (that’s 9am UK time) with
this catalogue and the David Leathart FRPSL
collection of GB Queen Victoria Specimens
including Revenues and Telegraphs. It is
an honour to present this collection which
is an amazing achievement and I hope you
agree looks fabulous in this catalogue!
Despite the seminal work of Marcus Samuel
on Specimen stamps (and from the sale of
his collection back in 2003 which seems
to have been the last major offering of
specimens), the rare examples still seem
to be underappreciated and undervalued.
Though this isn’t helped by the specialised
catalogue not pricing the different types for
each stamp, pricing only the most common
variant. So I’m sure there will be items in
David’s collection that specialist collectors
will not have seen before. And for those
interested in developing a collection of
Great Britain, “SPECIMEN” overprints also
offer a much more affordable way to form a
collection, in particular when it comes to the
high values and the “abnormals”.
This is then followed by the general GB,
kicking off with one of the most beautiful
collections that I have had the pleasure to
view; Stewart Gardiner FRPSL’s Large Gold
Medal Exhibit Collection on Sealing the
Envelope, offered intact. I know it doesn’t
sound particularly sexy but believe me
that is, so please go and see the complete
collection scanned on our website.
The Line Engraved section includes important
rarities such as the VR corner marginal pair
with plate letter, as well as mint blocks of
four from plate 2 and plate 4. After the usual
offering of Perforated Line Engraved and
Surface Printed is a collection of British Post
Offices abroad (see also the section of Niger
Coast from the same collector). The Kings
section has a range of proofs, QEII has plenty
of modern errors, and we finish with Officials,
Telegraphs and Collections.
The British Empire section has good
spread of material, with better sections
of Bermuda, BOIC, Cyprus and Hong
Kong. And we continue our run of offering
important sections of Ireland, with
further portions from the “Bokhara” and
“Madigan” collections, with pre-stamp
postal history, forerunners, overprinted
issues, commemoratives, definitives and
revenues. The auction continues with
impressive Mauritius, Niger Coast, rarities
from Rhodesia and Southern Rhodesia
and St. Vincent. South Africa includes
a section of Cape of Good Hope as well
as better Mafeking including a newly
discovered example of only six inverted
surcharges on the 3d.
The David Feldman team strives for
excellence in the lotting and promotion of
every property entrusted to us, and we’d
like to thank all our vendors for showing
their faith in us to present their items
and collections in a catalogue worthy
of displaying their philatelic treasures
in their best possible light. We wish you
success with your bids and satisfaction
with your purchases.

The Leathart Collection of Queen Victoria Specimens
including Revenues and Telegraphs
My Philatelic career had a somewhat unusual start.
Yes, I did have some stamps as a boy, but model trains
and girls then intervened. My mother had a lovely
pre-WWII Eastern European which sadly disappeared
after her death. I started as a Flatelist. In 2004 Terry
Pratchett introduced to the world his latest Discworld
Book, “Going Postal” and introduced to the world of
Ankh Morpork Post Office and its Postmaster one Moist
Von Lipwig. As part of this a little outfit in Wincanton,
“Discworld Emporium” introduced a series of Discworld
stamps. I started collecting these and Yes, I was
hooked! The stamps are still being sold.
However, in 2006 with retirement on the horizon my
partner, Penny Taylor, suggested that whilst she did
not like Discworld stamps, understandable, what about
postage stamps as our retirement project? In April
2006 we duly went to Norwich stamp fair and met Tony
Hender of Arun stamps. Penny asked him, “What has a
beginning and an end?” Tony suggested Postage Dues
1914 to 1996. So, off we went. But as you can see in
the Catalogue, we somewhat lost track of that after we
had collected the Postage Dues and Penny went off
hunting Mint 1887 Jubilees and Errors and Misperfs. As
can be seen I chased most things with SPECIMEN and
CANCELLED Overprints, (OP’s).
By 2014 we had joined King’s Lynn PS, and I had joined
the GBPS. In 2014 I entered the GBPS Competition and
won a trophy. Penny was winning Club trophies. I was
then asked if I could enter Stampex in February 2015
and managed 4 frames and to my utter amazement got
a Gold!
So why collect OP’s? It seemed at that time, by now
about 2009, few people were collecting them and
prices seemed reasonable. Also, they had OP’s that
were put onto the first printed sheets of each issue,
so they were truly mint. A kind dealer sent me Samuel
and Huggins “Specimen Stamps and Stationery of
Great Britain.” This gave me the impetus I need to
start seriously collecting. At the stamp shop in Carlisle,
I asked about SPECIMEN stamps and was told, “Oh,
that’s a bit specialist.” However, I did rather enjoy
the chase and the hunt of what a lot of folk saw as a
somewhat obscure side of the hobby.
So, what is so special about collecting SPECIMEN and
CANCELLED OP’s? Well, there seems to be about 360 or
so Postage stamps with SPECIMEN OP’s on them. Ther
are somewhat fewer CANCEELLD OP’s. I think there are
about 220 Postage SPECIMEN OP’s in this sale. This is
how I see where SPECIMEN OP’s fit into a collection.
Collectors need to be aware that the OP Handstamps
can very similar. Types 1 and 2 look the same but on
Type 2 the bottom stroke of the ‘E’ is shorter. Types 8,
10 and 11 seem the same but Type 8 is shorter than
or 11 Type 10 has a broad ‘M’ and Type 11 a narrow
‘M’. Then the Dr Perkins stamps has an unrecorded OP,
though Samel mentions it. It looks like a Type 10 but
longer so a Type 10A?
There are also some stamps can be found with several
different OP’s. E.g. 1867 10d Red-Brown a lovely stamp
can be found with Types 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11, so there
are 7 stamps to collect. The 1867 2/- Blue has Types 2, 5,
6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 so further 7 to collect.
1. Is a common stamp with a common SPECIMEN OP
Types 6, 8, 9 & 11. E.g. 1887 Jubilee low value Type 9.
There are about 115 Type 9 OP’s with about 8 different
versions.
2. Is a Common stamp with a Rare OP Types 1, 2, 3,
7, 13 & 16 and CANCELLED 14 and 18. E.g. 1855
4d Small Garter Type 3. The first Surface Printed
stamps.
3. Is a Rare stamp with a Common OP. E.g. Types 6, 8,
9 & 11. E.g. 1880 2/- Brown Type 9.
4. The ultimate is a Rare stamp with a Rare OP. E.g.
Types 1, 2, 7, 13 & 16 and 14 & 18. E.g. 1862 3d
Carmine with dots, Abnormal stamp with Type 2.
There is only one known of this stamp with an OP.
5. Extras are given to Double or Treble Overprinted OPs
and Inverted OPs.
This Auction mainly devoted to SPECIMEN and
CANCELLED OP’s is the first I am aware of since the
Spink Marus Samuel one of 2003 same year as Harmers
Koh-I-Noor Auction. The earliest is Harmers of 1983.
