Egypt – Banknotes

2119

Egypt 1 pound 25 June 1898, Pick 2r, Hanafy M1 (1 L.E.); Remainder note without signature and number, and with

stamp “CANCELLED”; 158 x 81 mm, beautifully designed and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson and Co. London, one of

the most famous banknotes of the 19th century and seldom offered in any grade, with the first date of the entire

National Bank of Egypt series. Possibly the only remainder note available on the market.

PMG Very Fine 25, with note “Cancellations Lightened, Repaired”, with a central vertical fold.

Such remainder banknotes were usually locked up without signature and serial number and eventually destroyed.

This particular note was overprinted and kept for archival purposes, and the attempt to lighten the cancellation

indicates that it was perhaps put into circulation alongside the issued banknotes. To find this particular note in a

presentable grade is incredibly rare and no similar remainder is recorded.

Ex Spink 21009, 2021, lot 220.
