Gupta Empire, Chandragupta I, c. 319-335, AV dinar, 7.29 g. (21 mm). Obverse: ‘king and queen’ type; king standing
at right, queen at left, facing each other, king holding up right hand, Brahmi legend at left Kumaradevi in straight line,
Brahmi legend right Chandra (gupta). Reverse: goddess enthroned facing, with back of the throne absent, seated on
lion facing right, holding diadem and cornucopia, tamgha to left, Brahmi inscription at right, dotted border around.
Kumar TOTGE 2024, Class II, variety B.
This ‘king and ‘queen’ type is a variation of the preceding lot, with the Brahmi inscription Sri Kumaradevi (the name of
the queen) in a straight line, and not the usual curved inscription.
Fine-VF, possible light edge mount at 12 o’clock. Ex Chand Collection 1.9.02

Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375, AV dinar, 7.72 g. (21 mm). Obverse: ‘archer’ type; king wearing short tunic
over trousers and necklace, a dagger on belt, standing left, holding a longbow in left hand and arrow in right, Garuda
standard at left with only top visible, Brahmi inscription Samudra below his left arm, circular Brahmi legend around
from 1 o’clock, including apraratha (a well-known misspelling). Reverse: goddess Lakshmi enthroned facing, holding
diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi inscription at right, apratiratha, tamgha left, dotted border around. Very rare and a
rare variety among archer coins. Raven, SG/group 2.
About EF, lustrous surfaces, struck with rusty dies. Ex Chand Collection British Museum no 1.11.04.
