Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375 (or Kachagupta), AV dinar, 7.52 g. (20 mm). Obverse: Chakra or Kaca type;

king standing, holding chakradhvaja (wheel-topped standard) and sacrificing at altar, with Brahmi kacha below his left

arm, circular legend around, kāco gām avajitya dyāṃ karmabhir uttamair jayati (Kaca having vanquished the earth,

conquers heaven through the highest deeds). Reverse: goddess Lakshmi standing, nimbate, holding lotus flower and

cornucopia, Brahmi inscription at right, sarvarājocchettā (uprooter of all kings), dotted border around. Kumar, TOTGE,

with belt standing, holding javelin with spearhead pointed down and sacrificing at altar, with Garuda standard in

left field, Brahmi Samudra below his left arm, circular Brahmi legend around from 1 o’clock, samaraśatavitatavijayo

jitaripur ajito divaṃ jayati (the unconquered one, whose victories extend over a century of battles, having conquered

his enemies, wins heaven) Reverse: nimbate goddess Lakshmi enthroned, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi

inscription at right, parakrama, tamgha left, dotted border around. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class II, B1. Raven, SG-Sc/

group 4. A fairly rare design that shows the king as a youthful figure.

VF+, a harmonious, well-centred strike on a circular flan, missing some details on the high points, With a wonderful

sharp reverse in which the dark deposits enhance the design, a few minor edge scratches. Ex Chand Collection
