Gupta Empire, Skandagupta, c. 455-467, AV dinar, 9.12 g. (23 mm). Obverse: Archer type. King with halo and long

shoulder-length curly hair wearing tailed tunic and sash over loin cloth, standing left, holding longbow in left hand,

arrow in right, complete Garuda standard at left and ring diadem, Brahmi legend under arm, skanda, circular Brahmi

legend around. Reverse: Lakshmi with halo seated facing on lotus, holding diadem and lotus left, tamgha to left,

Brahmi legend on reverse Kramadityah. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class II, variant A, 1. Raven, SkG/group 6.

This variant has a geometric tamgha symbol on the reverse with two horizontal bars instead of one. No similar variant

has been identified in the known corpus of Skandagupta archer coins.

VF, both sides are attractive and well-centred; obverse die appears to have been worn and rusty, slight edge crack at

curved curls curly wearing long, pleated loin cloth, standing to front, holding longbow in left hand, arrow in right,

Garuda standard at left with Garuda on a platform, rim diadem supporting a gem, Brahmi legend under arm, skanda,

circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: Lakshmi with halo seated facing on lotus with legs crossed at ankles, holding

diadem and lotus left, tamgha to left, Brahmi legend on reverse Kramadityah fully legible. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class

II, variant A, 1/2. Raven, SkG/group 6.

EF, very attractive, with parts of clear legend and a centred strike with the king’s feet just off the flan, depicting

complete king and Garuda, grey deposits on reverse enhance design features, some lustre showing through.
