1895 Mombasa Provisional “1/2 Anna” on 3a black on dull red initialled “T.E.C.R”, two examples on
1895 (May 9) envelope sent registered to England, further franked with two 190-95 1a blue-green
pairs, with London registered and Kilburn arrival ds, very fine philatelic franking and scarce usage of
these provisional issues.

1896 (Apr 27) “British East Africa” overprint 2 1/2a envelope sent to Reval (modern day Tallin in
Estonia), uprated with 1895 (Jul) 4 1/2a cancelled b Mombasa “A” squared circle ds, overfranked, sent
by someone from the Leipzig Lutheran Mission at Moschi, carried to Mombasa and posted there in the
normal mail in spite of the “Registered” endorsement, with the reverse showing a manuscript notation
from the Aden Postmaster: “Recd amongst the ordinary corr. in the mail bag from Mombasa per SS
Goa arrived here today”, along with Russian transit and arrival, slightly reduced at left, an unusual late
usage of the handstamped issues.

1903 (Jan 20) envelope sent registered from Nairobi to England with 1896-1901 1a, 2 1/2a, 4 1/2a and
7 1/2a tied by Nairobi EA Protectorate hatched cds, possibly paying the quintuple rate, 2a registration,
8a insurance and 1/2a late fee, boxed registration hs below, reverse with Mombasa Foreign Registration
Department cds, London arrival ds, small portion of backflap missing, a very attractive four-colour
franking; ex Rossiter.
