1840 1d. black, Pl. 2, TA, a superb marginal example from the lower left corner of the sheet showing
with full deckle edge and showing part inscription “PRICE 1d. Per L” and plate number “2”, large part
original gum; a couple of small faults mostly confined to the sheet margin, in no way detracting from the
fine appearance of this major exhibition rarity.

1840 1d black pl.4 BA-IA, vertical strip of eight (“DA” showing double letter “D”) with good to very large
margins on all sides and showing portions of six adjoining stamps at right, tied by red Maltese Cross
cancellation on slightly refolded entire dated 1840 (Sep 9) addressed to Plymouth, double-ring “MORE
/ TO /PAY” handstamp below, some marginal creases between the stamps, fine. A sensational and
extremely rare strip, thought to be the largest recorded vertical strip known on cover, a showpiece
of the highest calibre.
