Gupta Empire, Kumaragupta II, c. 473-476, AV dinar, 9.27 g. (21 mm). Obverse: Archer type, king with halo and

layered curls wearing tunic with long tails over pleated loin cloth and long, thin sash tied at waist with knot, holding

bow in left hand, arrow in right, Garuda standard at left, name in Brahmi under arm ku with crescent above, only

traces visible of circular legend. Reverse: Lakshmi with halo seated with folded legs facing on lotus, holding diadem

and lotus left, tamgha to left, Brahmi legend to right read by Kumar as kramajita, by Raven as kramādityaḥ, dotted

EF, a rare and very attractive coin from the reign of Kumaragupta II with well-defined details on both sides and an

impressive high relief. A particularly elegant portrayal of the king with good details of his attire.

curls wearing tailed tunic and sash over pleated loin cloth, standing to front, holding arrow in right hand, left hand

holding bow at top; behind to left, Garuda standard; gre or gu in what may be Brahmi between feet; Nara in Brahmi

below king’s left arm with a tiny crescent above; the king’s tall image has pushed the circular legend off the flan.

Reverse: nimbate Lakshmi seated with legs flat facing on lotus seat with pleating to her hip cloth, holding diadem

and lotus in left hand, tamgha to left, traces of Brahmi legend to right vālādityaḥ. Kumar, TOTGE, Class I, variety A.

EF, a very attractive and well-struck coin with rich details in the king’s and goddess’ attire; fully legible reverse inscription.
